SHERLOCK: PBS’s new mesmerizing mystery series (2010)

There is no more famous name in mystery lore than Sherlock Holmes. In a brilliant reimagining of the class tale by Arthur Conan Doyle, “Sherlock” introduces us to Holmes as seen through the 21st Century lens. We are invited to enter a unique world where the world’s most famous detective lives in modern day London, solving incredible and diabolic crimes.

Deftly portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, Holmes is seen as a savant drawn to solving crimes that police cannot fathom and in constant search of something to challenge him — an opponent to match wits with in the game of life. Alas, when throwing down the gauntlet to the world’s greatest mastermind criminals, one or two will answer that challenge — and with real lives in the balance, the stakes are literally life and death.

Swept up into Holmes’ life of whirlwind gamesmanship, Martin Freeman portrays Dr. John Watson, a military doctor seeking refuge from the horrors he has witnessed. Joining in the mad-cap adventures are Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs) as their landlady at 21-B Baker Street, Sarah (Zoe Telford) as Watson’s romantic interest, and Detective Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves). There are also surprise appearances from classic Sherlockian-lore, including the infamous Moriarty. But his appearance is too good to spoil.

“Sherlock” was created by Steven Moffat (“Doctor Who”) and Mark Gatiss. Both lend their masterful writing skills in penning two of three episodes of this 3-part mini-series. Each episode runs 90 minutes, where the audience will be both glued to their seats and left breathless in the end of each one — and never fear, a second series of 3 episodes is scheduled for broadcast next year to continue the adventures of “Sherlock.”

So whatever you do, do not miss this extraordinary adventure which begins on Sunday, October 24th at 9:00 p.m. on PBS “Masterpiece Mystery!” (Parts 2 and 3 will air on October 31st and November 7th.)
