Tonight marks the third season finale of the USA Network series “In Plain Sight.” Last year, “In Plain Sight” was selected as one of the television shows highlighted by the Los Angeles Times Envelope series. Coming off its critically acclaimed second season, it was worthy of Emmy consideration and today it continues to be a show worthy of such consideration.
The show focuses on the daily trials and tribulations of Mary Shannon, a deputy U.S. Marshal assigned with assisting in witness relocation — whether they be innocent bystanders testifying against criminals or criminals who have turned on their associates. Aiding in this unique area of law enforcement are her partner Marshall Mann and their boss Stan McQueen. Their priority is to ensure the safety of each of their witnesses, despite the fact that most of these witnesses do not seem to understand the nuances of the golden rule: you have to cut off all contact with your former life — or you are dead. Complicating the stories are Mary’s family which seems to attract their own fair share of trouble.
Portrayed by Mary McCormack, Deputy U.S. Marshal Mary Shannon is a brilliant combination of resilience, tenacity, intelligence and unwavering support and concern for her protectees. Watching her deftly maneuver between her professional and personal life is fascinating, as is her verbal repartee with her partner Marshall, which is frequently some of the best scenes of each episode.
At last year’s Los Angeles Time Envelope event, attending were co-creators and producers David Maples and Paul Stupin, along with cast members Mary McCormack, Paul Ben-Victor, Lesley Ann Warren, Holly Maples, Nichole Hiltz, and Todd Williams. They were all gracious enough to compliment the show’s creators and credit the show’s amazing writing and rich characters as key contributing factors for the show’s success.
As the series third season concludes, the future of this captivating show is undecided, but with a little luck USA Network will bring it back for another season to explore the challenges of federal witness protection and placement and let us relish more of Mary’s world of chaos reigned in only by sheer force of will.
