The title character in “Chuck” might be cuddly and fun. But when the third season starts this spring on NBC, you may have to add “dangerous” to his title.
Executive producers Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak told fans at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con that not only with Zachary Levi’s character be a potential danger to his handers, he could be a threat to the entire world.
“It has always been Sarah’s mission to protect Chuck from the world,” Schwartz said. “Now she will have to protect the world from Chuck.”
Now that Chuck has access to some extraordinary abilities, “he could potentially blow up the world,” Schwartz said.
Chuck’s new skills are not without its glitches and side effects, particularly as the physical combat skills were designed for an agent more like Chuck’s frenemy Bryce Larkin than for the average guy like Chuck. Thus, Chuck could experience computer glitches from the new and improved version of the Intersect that he downloaded into this brain last season.
“Chuck’s physical powers don’t necessarily last,” Schwartz said. “The new Intercept was designed for Bryce Larkin, super spy. Unfortunately, they got into Chuck Bartowski, an emotional guy with a lot of issues.”
But the side side effects are good, series star Levi said.
“He can’t know Chuck-Fu all the time,” Levi said. “It would make Chuck’s handlers obsolete and we can’t have that. So our very talented and wise creators have structured it so that the Chuck-Fu and any of the other physical powers that I may have have a window, a shelf life.”
Another wrinkle that could manifest early in the season is changes in the characters’ relationships. For Chuck and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski), there will be an unresolved expectation that will not be met that will drive a wedge between them, the producers said.
“Something very emotional and traumatic is going to happen between Chuck and Sarah,” and before fans can react in outrage, Schwartz added, “but it’s going to be really good.”
Additionally, now that Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) and Devon (Ryan McPartlin) are married, they have moved out of the apartment and into their own place.
“Now that Devon knows Chuck’s secret, you will start to see him submerge into the spy world,” Schwartz said.
Another major change this season is that Chuck and Morgan (Joshua Gomez) are now roommates, which is certain to ensure the bromance high-jinks will continue. As for what is going to happen to the Buy More, where Chuck works, Schwartz and Fedak would only confirm that the store would be featured in each episode.
“It’s out most expensive set,” Fedak said. “We’re definitely going to use it.”
“Chuck” is expected to return as a mid-season replacement this year on NBC.
